After a week of thinking that he might get his first Whelen Modified Tour victory via a phone call from NASCAR officials, Ron Silk did it Sunday the way it’s supposed to be done.
Silk, of Norwalk, beat Reggie Ruggiero on a late restart and held on to win the Modified Mania 150 Sunday at Thompson International Speedway in his 34th career Modified Tour start.
Ruggiero, of Rocky Hill, was second and Todd Szegedy of Ridgefield third.
For much of last week it was thought that Silk would be awarded the victory from the Sept. 15 New Hampshire 100 at New Hampshire International Speedway. NASCAR officials had confiscated the intake manifold from the race winning car of Szegedy and spent nearly a week examining and testing it before declaring the results on the track official on Thursday.
“It’s much better to win the race this way than the way we could have won last week’s,” Silk said.
Silk passed Ruggiero to take the lead for good on lap 138.
“Last week running up front all day [at NHIS] gave me a lot of confidence and I think that helped me a lot today,” Silk said.

Great racing today! The WMT proved today just how exciting their series is! I think the crowd at Thompson today was the loudest I have heard them in a long time. When the Black Flag got shown to T.C. the fans erupted with applause.
Very few cautions today and man, can those guys fly!! Real bad wreck in the practice session, I hope the driver is doing okay.
