Rep. Leonard C. Greene of Beacon Falls announced Monday that he will not be seeking reelection and will be retiring from the legislature.
A veteran Republican who has served in the House since January 1997, Greene also represents Seymour and Ansonia.
"It has been the greatest honor I have ever known to have had the privilege of representing you, and the communities I love, in the General Assembly,'' Greene wrote in a letter to his constituents.
"I had decided after the 2006 elections that this would be my last term,'' he said. "Having had the opportunity to serve for 12 years, I thought quite simply that this was the right time to move on to other personal and professional endeavors.''
Greene's colleagues applauded him Tuesday on the House floor when it was announced that it was his 50th birthday.
"You are the true meaning of a nifty 50,'' House Speaker James Amann told Greene.
