Although Ayla Brown was notable first for being so tall, and then for being daughter of a politician and a star basketball player, she actually got better in her weekly performances on “American Idol,” looking like she’d be the kind of competitor who’d soon begin to share front-runner status alongside Katharine McPhee or Paris Bennett.
But in the first regrettable vote result of the season, Ayla was among the four voted out on “American Idol” Thursday.
It was sad, too, to see her crying in a way that she probably wouldn’t if her team lost state.
“It wasn’t you,” Simon Cowell said by way of consolation. “It was the song.”
You’re a winner, he and the other judges said. But she still had to go.
Through tears she had to sing the Natasha Bedingfield song the undid her, “Unwritten.” It lived up to the vote: it didn’t sound so good. Not as good as Kinnik Sky did singing Alicia Keys’ “If I Ain’t Got You” for her own farewell (she sounded worst last week doing her cowboy number). If there was a woman who should have gone before Ayla, it was probably Melissa McGee, who was the nearest lowest vote getter.
Among the boys, it was much easier to say goodbye to callow Will Makar who did a soulless Marvin Gaye, and the goody grin of Gedeon McKinney. But Chicken Little Kevin Covais appears to be the joke vote recipient – after a terrible “Vincent,” he continued to sail into the top 12.
