After weeks of reruns, summaries and episodes with no forward movements, “Lost” took a severe turn Wednesday with so much activity in the final five minutes, it was almost as shocking as the violence that ensued.
Perhaps to set up a supposedly epochal season finale, perhaps to help promote creator J.J. Abrams’ new movie in the theaters, “Mission: Impossible: III,” perhaps to answer the above criticism over weekly wheel-spinning, all hell broke loose as the episode came to an end.
Harold Perrineau’s character Michael got some sort of bug in him and started firing, killing Michelle Rodriguez’ character Ana Lucia and then Hurley’s recent love interest Libby, played by Cynthia Watros. Then he wounded himself.
It was Michael who had come forward earlier with the most detailed information about the Others yet, with descriptions of their tents and bad food and everything. But maybe something else got into him as he got close to the Others. Maybe he was on an agreed duty to get his son Walt back.
What was weird about the two who apparently died in an episode called “Two for the Road” were the same two actresses who were arrested for drunk driving in Hawaii, where the show is shot.
Producers have said that as odd as that coincidence seems, especially in a series that is built on coincidences and clues, the evening’s dramatic turn of events were in the works long before those arrests.
But I suppose we'll see about that as the final episodes of the season play out.
