Football: Edsall Meets With The Team; No Word If He's Staying Or Going

According to a source close to the UConn football program, coach Randy Edsall met with his players Friday evening in Storrs and told them he was involved in a "process" with Georgia Tech as it pertains to the vacant coaching position at the school. He did not give an indication whether he was staying at UConn or leaving.

Sources said Edsall went to Atlanta on Thursday to meet with officials from Georgia Tech, who are searching for a replacement for Chan Gailey, who was fired by the school on Monday.

It's thought that Edsall interviewed for the position either late Thursday or early Friday in Atlanta.

A source said on Friday evening that Edsall brought the team together to tell them of his meeting with Georgia Tech.

Football: Randy Edsall Meeting With Georgia Tech

UConn football coach Randy Edsall left campus Thursday to meet with Georgia Tech officials about their vacant coaching position, a source close to the UConn program said.

Georgia Tech fired coach Chan Gailey on Monday.

Multiple sources confirmed that Edsall cleared his schedule and left campus Thursday. Those sources also confirmed that he canceled a team meeting and staff meeting.

Edsall was unavailable for comment.

Edsall, who has led the Huskies to nine wins and a berth in the Meineke Car Care Bowl this season, was the defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach at Georgia Tech in 1998 under George O'Leary before he was hired at UConn before the 1999 season. Georgia Tech went 10-2 in 1998 and beat Notre Dame in the Gator Bowl.

Football: Tampa Tribune All-Big East Team And Awards

UConn coach Randy Edsall was voted Big East coach of the year and UConn was voted a unanimous choice as the Big East’s surprise team of the year in the Tampa Tribune’s All-Big East Media team and awards.

UConn players Danny Lansanah and Robert Vaughn were each named to the all-defensive team and Tyvon Branch was voted the conference’s top return man.

Football: Randy "The Intimidator" Edsall

On Dec. 27, two days before the Meineke Car Care Bowl on Dec. 29 in Charlotte, UConn football players will be trading in their football helmets and uniforms for racing helmets and fire suits.

One of the perks for those playing in the Meineke Bowl is getting a chance to go out to Lowe’s Motor Speedway in Concord, N.C. and go through the Richard Petty Driving Experience at the 1.5-mile oval.

Yes, that means UConn football players riding shotgun in NASCAR Nextel Cup stock cars at 160 mph at the track.

Football: Edsall Talks About Georgia Tech Rumors

In the midst of the hoopla Tuesday at the Burton Family Football Complex in Storrs over UConn’s invitation to the Meineke Car Care Bowl, UConn coach Randy Edsall was asked about rumors that he is a candidate for the newly vacated head coaching position at Georgia Tech.

Georgia Tech fired coach Chan Gailey on Monday.

Edsall was a defensive coordinator at Georgia Tech for one season in 1998, the year before he came to UConn.

“I’ve said it many many times,” Edsall said. “It doesn’t matter what line of work you’re in, if you have success there’s going to be rumors out there and they’re rumors.
